history and archaeology tours

Walking tours provide insight into 17th-century Jamestown and the research conducted by the Jamestown Rediscovery team. Offerings include an introduction to Jamestown, an overview of the archaeology of James Fort, a trip back in time with a living history interpreter, and in-depth discussions of particular aspects of Jamestown’s history. Check the Visit Guide to see what tours are available this week and where they begin.

Archaeology in Action

Our archaeology team is hard at work uncovering new information about early Jamestown. Check out excavations in progress in and around James Fort. Visitors are welcome to observe and to ask questions, but we ask that you please respect the safety ropes. The field team is generally excavating Monday through Friday, weather permitting.

The Ed Shed

At the Ed Shed, young visitors can sort through artifacts from the excavation sites, pick through 17th-century food remains to find evidence of what people ate, use geographic technology to map archaeological features, and more! Families will have hands-on learning experiences with the various activities at the Ed Shed. The artifacts that visitors interact with at the Ed Shed will be real pieces of Jamestown history, not reproductions. The Ed Shed is typically open from late May through early August. Once the schedule is set, it will be published on the events calendar.
