Tour Frequently Asked Questions

Exploring Historic Jamestowne on your own is a great way to see the island, but guided tours offer a way to learn more about the site from one of our many experts. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions to help plan your visit to get the most out of the experience.
What type of tours of Historic Jamestowne are available?
At least one hour-long walking tour is offered daily, weather permitting. These tours may be led by an archaeologist, an education team member, or a National Park Service ranger, and are included with any Historic Jamestowne admission ticket. We also offer—for an additional fee—school, custom adult group tours, and specialty tours. To learn more about these programs, please visit our Tours page.
What is the tour schedule?
The schedule for the walking tours varies seasonally. The weekly schedule provides information on some of the upcoming options, but the times of the park ranger tours are only announced on the day they are held, so please check at the Visitor Center upon arrival for the most current information. Specialty tours and programs are usually offered twice a month from April through October. The 2019 schedule for specialty tours will be posted shortly.
How do I reserve a school or custom adult tour for my group?
To learn more about tours for school and other youth groups, please visit our Educational Tours page. For information about booking adult group tours, please visit our Custom Tours page.
Do I have to buy a separate Historic Jamestowne admission ticket if I purchase a specialty program or tour ticket?
No, the price of online tickets for Tales of the Silver Shovel, A Century of Women in Archaeology at Jamestown, Forensic Fridays, and the Curator’s Artifact Tour includes 7-day admission to Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield. Admission tickets can be redeemed at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center Ticket Desk prior to your program as long it falls within the 7-day window that the admission is valid. Please see below if you have a National Park Service pass, Preservation Virginia pass, Four-Site Value ticket, or America's Historic Triangle ticket.
Can I use my National Park Service pass, Preservation Virginia pass, Four-Site Value ticket, or America's Historic Triangle ticket for entry when participating in a specialty program or tour?
All of the specialty tour and program tickets available through the website include full-price admission. If you have a pass or ticket that includes reduced admission to Historic Jamestowne and wish to purchase tickets for Tales of the Silver Shovel, A Century of Women in Archaeology at Jamestown, Forensic Fridays, or the Curator’s Artifact Tour, please call our Visitor Services team at 757-856-1250 or stop by the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center ticket desk. They will be able to assist you in purchasing the program tickets. Please note that National Park and Preservation Virginia pass holders will still need to pay $5.00 per adult (16 & older) upon arrival at the Visitor Center on the day of the program. For additional information on admission fees and pass information, please visit our Tickets page.
How do I redeem my specialty tour tickets and where do the tours begin?
Simply bring your email receipt either in printed form or on an electronic device and present it at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center ticket desk. The staff will provide a sticker indicating participation in the tour. Tales of the Silver Shovel and the Curator's Artifact Tour begin at the Pocahontas Statue. A Century of Women in Archaeology at Jamestown and Forensic Fridays begin at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center. Participants are asked to be at the program meeting point five minutes before the scheduled start time.
What should I do if I did not receive my email receipt?
Occasionally the email receipts may be caught in spam filters. If you do not receive your confirmation, check to see if it might be in your spam folder or send an email with the buyer's name as well as the name and date of the program purchased to hjweb@preservationvirginia.org and we will send a copy. Our Visitor Services staff can also verify ticket purchases upon arrival if you do not have your receipt.
If I live outside of the United States, can I sign up for a Specialty Tour or Evening Program?
Yes! We regret that we are unable to accept purchases online without a United States billing address. However if you will be visiting from abroad and wish to participate in a Specialty Tour or Evening Program that requires a pre-purchased ticket, please send an email to hjweb at preservationvirginia.org with the following information:
  • Name of Tour or Program (Tales of the Silver Shovel, Curator’s Artifact Tour, Evening Program Name, etc.)
  • Date and Time of Tour or Program
  • Number of Tickets Needed (For daytime programs, please include the number of Adult and Youth tickets desired)

If ticket(s) are available for the selected tour or program, you will receive an email confirmation and further information about how to purchase the ticket(s).
Are specialty tour tickets refundable?
Unfortunately we are unable to issue refunds unless the tour or program is cancelled by the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation. However if your plans change and we can accommodate you on another specialty tour that is the same price, we will be happy to do so. Please email hjweb@preservationvirginia.org if you have purchased a specialty tour or program ticket and would like to see if it can be transferred to another date.
