The Gentlewoman’s Companion

Location: The Ellen Kelso Memorial Garden (located at the Yeardley House)

It’s 1680, and Lady Berkeley is in her third year of widowhood following the death of Governor Sir William Berkeley, whose estate and reputation both were left in tatters after Bacon’s Rebellion.  But new possibilities are awakening–family friend Philip Ludwell has offered her marriage, a union that would also make her the stepmother of two young children.  As the nuptials approach, Frances reflects on the duties of housewifery, the importance of female education, and her nostalgia for the beautiful garden that once graced her home at Green Spring.  Can what she will gain console her for all she has lost?
