She was no Servant
Location: Memorial Church
In 1642, ladies’ maid Anne Fletcher left England destined for New Albion colony in the Delaware Bay, a venture that promised religious freedom for all Christians. Instead, the colony’s leader, Sir Edmund Plowden, brought his servants and settlers to Virginia. After months spent working on the Eastern Shore in violation of their contracts, the servants’ patience wore thin. Follow Anne Fletcher’s tumultuous journey as she recounts her escape to Maryland and subsequent return to Virginia to bring an official lawsuit against her former master, declaring to the courts that “shee was noe servant of his.”
