The Jamestown Church

$5.95

Description

The Jamestown Church was the first Protestant church in the country.  From its humble beginnings under a tattered sailcloth in1607 until its abandonment in the mid eighteenth century, the church played a vital role in the lives of the early colonists and earned the distinction of being the site of the first representative legislative assembly in America.

The APVA moved heaven and earth and the state legislature to save the site of the church and graveyard. Their excavations in the late 19th century uncovered new information about the site, as have the current excavations of the 1607 James Fort site.

The Jamestown (Memorial) Church today is shown through pictures of the exterior, including the graveyard, and interior views, including the famous plaques, reveal interesting aspects of colonial life. The original foundations, which are preserved under glass, truly provide a glimpse back in time.
