Description
Disease, famine, and sporadic attacks from the neighboring Powhatan Indians took a tremendous toll on the population of the settlement. In the winter of 1609-1610 Jamestown saw its darkest hour, when 300 settlers were trapped inside the fort to freeze, starve, or otherwise suffer. Only 60 of the 300 survived that winter.
