Description
The design on the sleeves of this t-shirt is taken from a waistcoat made for the 400th commemoration of the marriage of Pocahontas to Englishman John Rolfe. Portraying Pocahontas, Wendy Taylor of the Pamunkey tribe wore an elaborately embroidered jacket inspired by a 17th century original. The embroidered design includes flora and fauna native to Virginia, and took 70 women over 1200 hours to complete. Click here to learn more about the life of Pocahontas.
The waistcoat’s design was inspired by the Falkland Jacket, a 17th century example, housed in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The Falkland Jacket’s design depicts mythical and realistic creatures and plants, while the reproduction replaces these motifs with fruit, flowers, insects, fish, fowl, and animals specific to Jamestown and Virginia.
