Iron divider tool

Made of iron, copper, or brass,  dividers were one of the tools that James Fort carpenters would have needed to build the buildings and much of the fort itself. This example, made from iron and recovered from a pit in the fort, would have used for scribing circles used for creating and transferring scales, dividing spaces equally, and scribing joints for tight fits. Armed with a compass and a flat piece of wood, the James Fort carpenters would have been able to generate exact scales and angles, simple items that are the foundations of modern civil engineering.
