The red fox is common throughout North America, and Jamestown Island is home to a large population. They may be seen along the island drive road, especially in the early morning or late afternoon hours. Another fox known to this region is the gray fox, whose bones have been found in the archaeological excavations at James Fort. The gray fox once may have outnumbered the red fox in this region, but human development in the past few centuries has been more advantageous to the red fox. The fur of the fox in the region would have been valuable to the English colonists as well as the Virginia Indians.
