A “historie of travel into Virginia Britania”
Location: Hunt Shrine, weather permitting
Join William Strachey, secretary of the Jamestown colony as he reflects on his time in Virginia. In June 1609 Strachey, a Cambridge-educated patron of the London stage scene, sailed on the Sea Venture to seek his fortune in the New World. Six weeks after their departure Strachey and the other passengers shipwrecked in Bermuda. Strachey recorded the 10-month ordeal of the colonists to build new ships to continue onto Jamestown. Upon his arrival in Virginia in June 1610 he was named the Secretary of the Colony. Since then he has been chronicling the aftermath of the Starving Time winter as well as the efforts of the new leaders to instill martial law and rebuild the colony.
Program will also be offered on July 23 at 10:00am and 3:00pm.
