_IGP2188_rect“Governor Berkeley Laments the Rebellion”

Location: Memorial Church

Join Governor Sir William Berkeley, who will recount his time in Virginia and the unhappy circumstances that led to Bacon’s Rebellion. First appointed governor in 1641 by King Charles I, Berkeley was once popular and held Virginia together during the English Civil War. But now in 1677 things have changed: Virginia is in turmoil and Jamestown in ashes. A rebellion over Indian policy and colonial rule led by Nathaniel Bacon has finally been put down. Many were captured. Many were pardoned. Many were hanged. The defiant governor, who has worked hard to put an end to the “treason and rebellion” that began the previous year, has just learned that a fleet is to arrive any day to investigate what happened. How will he explain the recent events?

Program will also be offered on September 17 at 10:00am and 12:30pm.
