“An Honest and Industrious Woman”

Location: The Hunt Shrine

Meet Joan Pierce, a dauntless Englishwoman of early Jamestown. Arriving on the ship Blessing in August of 1609, Joan Pierce remembers her first winter as a “starving time” – when 340 colonists were reduced to 60. Reunited in the spring of 1610 with her husband who had been shipwrecked on Bermuda, she has seen the ensuing years as a struggle to survive “martial law” and war with the Virginia Indians. The marriage of John Rolfe to Pocahontas brought not only peace to the settlements along the James, but renewed optimism for economic stability thru the growing of tobacco.

Mistress Pierce’s account will give voice to the early colonists and the challenges met by one of the earliest female settlers in colonial Virginia.

This program is offered at 10:00 am & 3:00pm.
