a century of women in archaeology at jamestown Mary Anna Hartley in the Memorial Church

Location: Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center. This program includes an indoor lecture followed by a visit to the Jamestown Memorial Church (weather permitting).

Learn about the history and archaeology of Jamestown’s churches as well as the crucial role women have played in the excavations since 1897. Mary Jeffery Galt, Mary Winder Garrett, and Annie Galt oversaw some of the first excavations on Jamestown Island more than a century ago. Recent excavations on the same site, led by Site Supervisor Mary Anna Hartley, have unearthed new clues that have answered many of the unsolved mysteries about where the first General Assembly was held in 1619.

Please visit the Century of Women page to see additional days when this program is offered.
