Location: The Dale House Café

Join Jamestown Rediscovery Public Historian, Mark Summers, as he situates the commemoration of Jamestown within the civil rights struggle to acknowledge black history. He will discuss how Jamestown became something of a Confederate “Lost Cause” shrine in the 19th century. As such African American history was ignored and African American visitors were denied admission to the park during the early 20th century. Yet African Americans told their own story of their arrival in Virginia through exhibitions, sculpture, poetry, and protest. At Historic Jamestowne the work of today’s guides and researchers stands on the shoulders of the figures of the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights Movement.

This program will also be offered on February 27 at 2:00pm.

Free with paid admission to Historic Jamestowne
