This collector’s item was produced for the 400th anniversary of the establishment of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. Each stamp cachet features the official USPS Jamestown stamp on an envelope and includes an information card. The card reads:

” Welcome to Jamestown, Virginia

To commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Founding of Jamestown, a cachet design contest was help among Virginia’s 3,000 public and private schools, including 1.3 million students and teachers, kindergarten through higher education. The cachet design on the left side of this envelope is the artwork of one of the four first-place contest winners. The design contest was initiated by the Jamestown 2007 Stamp and Cachet Project and was conducted in conjunction with the Williamsburg Stamp Society, Jamestown 2007, the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, APVA Virginia, the Virginia Department of Education, and the United States Postal Service. More than 4,000 designs from across the Commonwealth of Virginia were submitted for adjudication. In 2001, the Williamsburg Stamp Society began a project to insure the 400th Anniversary was appropriately recognized by the issuance of a unique commemorative stamp. The first-class postage stamp, designed by the U.S. Postal Service, depicts the three ships – Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery – that carried the settlers on their long voyage from England to Jamestown. The triangular shape of the stamp represents the triangular shape of the original 1607 James Fort. Collectors call the cachet envelope, with the Jamestown stamp and the First Day of Issue cancellation, a First Day Cover.
