Description

By the late 15th century the matchlock musket emerged as the main weapon on European battlefields and in the New World.  The loading procedure was slow and it required great caution because the lighted match was always in close proximity to the powder. This extraordinary image captures the very moment of ignition and the resulting shower of sparks from the Jamestown colonists’ weapon of choice.

11″ x 14″ matted print by staff photographer Charles Dufor.
