Declaration of the People, Nathaniel Bacon

On July 30, 1676, Nathaniel Bacon issued a Declaration of the People of Virginia, which accused Governor William Berkeley of corruption and condemned the colonial government’s unjust taxation and failure to protect the people.

Bacon led an armed uprising against the government known as Bacon’s Rebellion, which led to the burning of the Virginia capitol, then still at Jamestown, in September of 1676.

Reproduced on antique parchment.
