Jamestown’s Church Tower is the only 17th-century structure still standing in Virginia’s first colonial capital. Constructed sometime after 1676, the tower was three stories tall with a belfry in the top level. The church associated with the tower was the final iteration of three periods of church construction that began in 1617. This sacred ground was not only Jamestown’s religious center, but also the place where Virginia’s first General Assembly met in 1619, marking the beginning of representative democracy in the colony and our nation. Today, the preserved Church Tower and the 1907 Memorial Church stand as a reminder of the extraordinary story of America’s Birthplace.
