Position Summary: The Development Writer works to inspire potential and existing guests and donors with meaningful messages and stories about Jamestown with the objective of increasing Island visitation and donations to the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation.

primary responsibilities
  • With the Development Manager, writes informative and persuasive corporate, foundation, and individual proposals following an annual schedule.  Prepares timely gift stewardship reports which illustrate the effectiveness of donor involvement.
  • Works with the Development team to prepare compelling solicitation communications and proposals which creatively reflect the importance and relevance of Jamestown’s mission to current and prospective donors.
  • Works with the Development team to provide superior, personalized donor recognition including onsite, in printed materials, and using other creative methods. 
  • Prepares marketing communications via the Foundation’s website, social media, brochures, magazine advertisements, emails, newsletters, phone campaigns, and personalized donor mailings to encourage new and returning visitation to Jamestown. 
  • In collaboration with the audience management team, collects, organizes, and carefully maintains the variety of Jamestown constituents to effectively target messaging.
  • Assists with appropriate copy for timely, personalized acknowledgements to significant contributors for signature by the Foundation President.
  • Proofreads and edits copy, the Foundation’s annual report, newsletters, and other written materials. 
  • Assists with press and donor visits and events as needed, participating in the overall success of the Development department.

Must have a comprehensive understanding of Foundation objectives and be able to express these objectives in a compelling and organized manner.  Must have exemplary skills in writing, grammar, and language usage.  Must be a proficient proofreader.  Must have a strong understanding of the fundraising and marketing processes and how they support the mission of the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation. 

Must be extremely organized and pay close attention to detail.  Requires ability to exercise sound judgment to make recommendations and solve problems.  Must have strong analytical and communication skills, and the flexibility to work in an environment with widely varying workload levels.  Must be able to work with minimal supervision by assuming the responsibilities required of the position and working in a proactive manner.  Must work effectively under pressure and be able to meet deadlines.

Must be able to adapt to changing work priorities and be willing to work non-standard hours including weekends and evenings as needed.  Must have a willingness to travel occasionally. Must have a polished and professional demeanor and be comfortable on camera. 

Experience in copywriting, marketing, and fundraising required.  Background in database administration, audience management, and proficiency in Excel are essential. 

Must be dedicated to Jamestown Rediscovery’s mission, keeping the foundation’s long-term needs always at heart. Qualifications generally gained through a four-year degree (BA in History or English preferred) plus five to seven years’ experience in writing, development, and marketing.

This is a full-time position and includes benefits. This position may require after hours work.
