February is the month to show your support for Historic Jamestowne!
Slightly more than 210,000 visitors came through our gate this past year. On average, only 32 percent of our visitors pay the entrance fee, while the rest are children under 16, NPS and Preservation Virginia pass holders, and active military personnel. The revenue generated at current fee levels simply cannot support the archaeological research, public programs and on-site facilities and operations at Historic Jamestowne. As required by Federal law, the National Park Service solicits comment from the public for any proposed fee changes before implementing any new fee structure. We hope you will voice your support for our continued work by attending a public meeting or sending your comments to the National Park Service.
As proposed, beginning April 27, 2013, the admission fee charged at Historic Jamestowne will increase from $10.00 to $14.00 for adults age 16 and older. Children under age 16 and NPS military pass holders will continue to enter for free. The fee would include unlimited admission to both the Historic Jamestowne and Yorktown Battlefield for seven consecutive days. Visitors that purchase or present an NPS Senior, COLO Annual, Access, or Interagency pass, and Preservation Virginia members will pay $5.00 for entrance to Historic Jamestowne. All National Park Service Fee Free Days will be honored.
There will be three informational meetings in the coming weeks to discuss the changes in more detail and address any questions or concerns:
- Thursday, February 14, 2013, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm at the Yorktown Battlefield Visitor Center (1000 Colonial Parkway, Yorktown);
- Friday, February 15, 2013, from 10 am to Noon in the Williamsburg Regional Library Theatre (515 Scotland Street, Williamsburg);
- Saturday, February 16, 2013, from 4 to 6 pm at the Historic Jamestowne Visitor Center (1368 Colonial Parkway, Jamestown).
Comments on the proposed fee structure will also be accepted in writing through February 28, 2013. Comments should be submitted to P. Daniel Smith, Superintendent, Colonial National Historical Park, P.O. Box 210, Yorktown, VA 23690. Comments addressed to the Superintendent will also be accepted via e-mail at hjadmin@preservationvirginia.org.
These proposed changes to the fee structure are vital to sustaining the highly significant archaeological research, educational programs, and operations at Historic Jamestowne, the first permanent English colony in America. Preservation Virginia and the National Park Service believe this measure will help secure the future of Historic Jamestowne for generations of Americans to come.
